not an AEPhi... yet :) [25 Sep 2009|03:54pm]

[ mood | pleased ]

Hi, I'm Megan and I'm in the process of trying to recolonize the Phi Rho chapter at Cleveland State University in Ohio. We (my friend and I who are spearheading the process) are looking for any AEPhi sisters from the Phi Rho chapter and any support you're willing to give us! :)

Well, since it has been a while since the last post and I just joined the community, I figured I would make my intro post!

I was a member of the Alpha Kappa chapter at Miami University in Ohio. In my time as a Phi, I was Ritualist and Alumni Chair and I graduated in 2003. The chapter then closed in spring of 2004. Last fall a new colony was formed and they now have about 18 members that I have heard. I am very happy that A E Phi has rejoined the greek community at Miami.

P.S. My icon is from a picture that was taken at our Mardi Gras formal in the spring of 2003.

Hey...this is Jackie and I am from the Phi Chapter at UCLA! I am really excited that I found this LJ community while I was doing some research on some of our old aephi songs. We have some lyrics that we found from a while back that have no tune and such..it would be awesome to share since maybe some of you sisters might know them! I am really excited to meet all the girls here, even if it's just through LJ! Hope everyone had a wonderful new year!!!

Getting up on my soapbox...

Ok, I'm posting this since another sister of mine told me about it and I feel it should NEVER have happened. However it did. There is an AEPhi chapter that has gotten in trouble with hazing.

Please, do not haze potential members. What does that say. Really, I wouldn't want to join an organization if I heard one of their chapters somewhere did that. We have very special ties that make us AEPhi's and that can be tarnished by a few members not thinking. I don't know if it was done in the past to you, but it has to stop NOW. We can't portray ourselves as the best sorority when this happens.

I know I'm preaching to many people that wouldn't even consider hazing. But obviously it's still out there. And if nothing else, maybe this will be seen by a potential new member that feels they are being hazed and will speak up.

We don't haze. It's in our national constitution. We sign a form every sememster that we don't haze. I feel that this chapter should get a far worse punishment then they received. But, I guess they lucked out.

Let's just keep it a group of sisters that want to promote sisterhood, not put ourselves on the same track as a gang initiation.

stepping off my soapbox

Sorry. Just felt I had to post this.

Register for Alternative Spring Break: Detroit [11 Feb 2005|09:49pm]
Alternative Spring Break: Detroit is a substance-free spring break spent volunteering with social issues that affect our urban core. ASBD 2005 will take place from Sunday, March 13 at 5 p.m. to Friday, March 18 at 12 p.m.

What issues we will be exploring:

*Diversity: We will discover why we are one of the most racially segregated regions in the nation, as well as discuss how this creates barriers in community dialogue, and how that intersects with hunger and poverty.
*Crime/blight: We will take an inside look at the criminal justice system, as well as discover why the removal of blight is so essential in combating the conditions which stimulate crime and blight to accumulate.
*Arts/culture: We will discover how local artists are contributing to the growing positivity attached to Detroit, as well as the struggles they go through in order to establish themselves and their ideals in the inner city.
*City Revitalization: We will go behind the scenes with businesses and city development projects that are changing the face of Detroit.

Our afternoons will be spent volunteering at three different volunteer sites related to our issues: Hunger Action Coalition, Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision, and People's Community Services. Volunteers will package up food, remove blight from neighborhoods, and produce a play with children at a community center, respectively.

Trip Highlights

*Tour SuperBowl XL Headquarters at Ford Field!
*Visit local art galleries!
*Go behind the scenes at 36th District Court & the Juvenile Detention Center!
*Learn about the history of Detroit!
*Dine at ethnic restaurants throughout the city!
*Meet new people at WSU!
*Make a difference!

*You must be a current Wayne State University student.
*You must agree to substance-free policy (no tolerance policy on alcohol and drugs).
*You must be willing to commit the whole week.

The cost of participating in the program is $50/participant. It is all-inclusive.

We still have a few open slots. If you’d like to apply, or find out more information, visit http://projectvolunteer.tripod.com/id6.html.
